PNR number is a 10 digit number, introduced in Railways to uniquely identify the information of a traveler or a group of travelers. PNR - Passenger Name Record - points to the record in a database of a computer reservation system (CRS) that comprises details of the traveler/a set of people travelling together.

For a booking to be completed there should be five sets of details to be provided: they are the passenger name, details of his contact address, ticket number/ticketing time limit, itinerary, and name of the person who books the ticket. In the railway ticket it is present at the upper left corner.

The website will make a record in the CRS when a traveler books a ticket to travel and uses a record locator in the database to recognize each PNR. The passenger needs to keep the PNR information handy in order to keep track of the booking status and seating specification.

Check the PNR

There are several methods available now to track the PNR status - Indian railways, such as through SMS, applications on the mobile, or looking up on the IRCTC website. There is a toll-free number (usually 136) to which a passenger can call for the Indian Railway’s PNR status. Several mobile applications are available in the Google Play Store for getting the PNR status accurately.

The toll free number used for call-based enquiry is the same as the one for SMS-based tracking. The passenger needs to send the SMS to this number only once, and the system will keep him updated every time the status changes.
