India is a diverse country in terms of its people and terrain. It has mountains, beaches, desserts, valleys and plateaus. Konkan is a coastal strip bounded by the Arabian Sea and Sahyadris. It is a land of abundance – rich mineral sources, dense forests and fertile agricultural lands and also a formidable terrain.
The Konkan Railway - proof of solidarity
The lifeline of the Konkan region is the Konkan railway. It connects Mumbai the commercial capital of India with Mangalore. It is a 741-kilometer line and connects the 3 states of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. It runs across flooding rivers, deep gorges and soaring mountains. Konkan railway is an excellent example of team spirit and human intelligence. It is also a solid proof for the intelligence of our Indian engineers. There are around 38 trains running daily in this section.
There are many tourist places along the Konkan railway line. It also helps in promoting tourism in those 3 states. Goa especially is one of the states in India that is very much dependent on tourism for its revenue.
The railways have come up with many indigenous ideas to promote tourism. Like for instance Shravan Seva is a service targeted at the senior citizens. Under this service the Railways offers its helping hand to the senior citizens travelling alone in that sector. All they need to do is to send an SMS, 4 hours prior to the journey.
There will be an attendant to help them with their luggage. The railways have also introduced a diet service for people who are diabetic and or diet conscious. They have both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. They have also made some passenger friendly amenities like foot over bridges, high platforms and platform shelters.
